What Makes a True Business Leader? By Adam Toren

Some people seem to be the ones to always make great things happen. These go-getters might not succeed at everything they do, but their success rate is higher than most, and they never let setbacks get them down for long. To some people, they might seem to attract success like a magnet. Of course in reality, there is no magic spell to draw success your way. The champions of the entrepreneurial world work at success just like anyone else. But the most successful entrepreneurs do seem different in some ways, don’t they? What sets them apart from the rest of the crowd?

Over the past twelve years or so, I’ve interviewed hundreds of entrepreneurs form a wide range of business models. Most of the men and women I’ve talked with for interviews have accomplished some level of success, but some have really “made it.” And among the most successful people I’ve met there are a few traits that stand out above the rest. If you want to be a business leader, you would be wise to engrain these qualities in your character.

True Business Leaders Focus on Their Passion
The mantra of the most successful entrepreneurs is, “Do what you love, and delegate the rest.” Real leaders know that the only way they’ll fulfill their vision is to keep their eye on the prize. They don’t get bogged down with the small details, and they don’t spend their days doing tasks that they find demotivating. While they realize that details are important, they find good people to attend to them and then concentrate on making great things happen.

True Business Leaders Work for Themselves
Of course we can call all entrepreneurs self-employed, but that’s not what I mean here. Those who have found ultimate success have done so not to please or impress anyone else. They’ve worked hard and accomplished great things because they didn’t want to let themselves down. Sure, they want to provide for their family, and they aren’t generally self-centered, but ultimately, they’re doing what they do for the passion within and to feel the exhilaration of winning.

True Business Leaders Know the Power of “Good Enough”
In order to keep driving forward in business, you have to know when something is good enough, and then move on to the next challenge. It’s a myth that great leaders demand perfection. High quality, integrity, being the best – absolutely. But perfection? No. If you have to work to make something perfect before progressing, you’ll be stuck in the same place for a very long time.

True Business Leaders Take Action Now
While the most successful entrepreneurs always have the big picture in mind, they’re also great at focusing on the here and now and taking decisive action. Waiting for the perfect moment or the ideal conditions, over planning, and red tape can be a business killers. True leaders are action oriented and don’t put off until tomorrow what should be done today.
How’d you do? Are you a true business leader? Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
