As you lose hearing acuity, it affects your ability to understand conversation, to modulate your voice, and to articulate clearly. A mild to moderate hearing loss is called a conductive loss and a severe impairment is known as a sensorineural loss. A conductive loss may be intermittent as in the case of allergies and colds where fluid can collect in the ear. A sensorineural impairment involves the loss of hair cells in the inner ear which cannot be replaced. A mixed loss is a combination of the two. Signs of Loss •People ask you to speak up much of the time. What can you do to protect your hearing? Small businesses invest in computer back-up systems, and install security measures.
